In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global tourism industry suffered a devastating blow. South Africa, renowned for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and diverse wildlife, was no exception. As lockdowns took hold and borders closed, tourism ground to a halt, leaving countless businesses on the brink of collapse. Yet, amid the despair, one entrepreneur saw an opportunity to defy the odds and breathe new life into the industry.

Meet Morné van der Merwe, founder of Shaka Africa Tours. Morne’s journey began long before the pandemic, fuelled by a passion for travel and a deep love for his homeland. After years of exploring the world and gaining invaluable experience in the tourism sector, he returned to South Africa at the end of 2019, ready to embark on his next adventure: launching his own tourism company.

However, fate had other plans. Just as Morné was gearing up to kickstart his business, the world came to a standstill. With international travel suspended indefinitely and uncertainty looming over the future, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Undeterred, Morné refused to let adversity dictate his destiny. Instead, he saw an opportunity to innovate and adapt in the face of unprecedented challenges.

While traditional tourism companies were shutting their doors, Morne rolled up his sleeves and got to work. Leveraging his expertise and entrepreneurial spirit, he devised a bold strategy to navigate the new normal. Recognizing the growing demand for immersive, authentic experiences and domestic travel, he pivoted his focus to cater to local adventurers hungry for exploration.

Shaka Africa Tours was born out of this resilience and determination. With a commitment to sustainability, community empowerment, and unparalleled customer service, Morne set out to redefine the travel experience. From local golf tours around the Western Cape to cultural immersions in the vibrant streets of Cape Town, Shaka Africa Tours offered a curated selection of tailor-made itineraries designed to showcase the best of South Africa while supporting local communities and conservation efforts.

But building a business from scratch in the midst of a pandemic was no easy feat. Morné faced a myriad of challenges, from navigating ever-changing regulations to convincing wary travellers that it was safe to explore again. Yet, through sheer perseverance and unwavering optimism, he forged ahead, building a loyal customer base and earning rave reviews for his unparalleled dedication and personal touch.

In addition to his tourism efforts, Morné recognized the importance of diversifying his revenue streams. Unable to rely solely on tourism during the pandemic, he seized the opportunity to create merchandise bearing the Shaka Africa brand. From t-shirts to hats, these products not only served as a source of income but also helped to raise awareness and promote the company’s values and mission.

As the world gradually began to reopen and travel restrictions eased, Shaka Africa Tours emerged stronger than ever. With a newfound appreciation for the beauty of their own backyard, South Africans flocked to experience the wonders of their country like never before. And with Morné at the helm, Shaka Africa Tours was ready to welcome them with open arms, guiding them on unforgettable journeys filled with adventure, discovery, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

In early 2023, Morné took Shaka Africa Tours to new heights by partnering with lifelong friend, professional photographer and digital marketing specialist, Kyle Kingsley Green. Together, they have embarkeded on a mission to elevate the company’s offerings and tap into the luxury travel sector. With Kyle’s creative marketing background and Morne’s expertise in crafting unforgettable experiences, Shaka Africa™ Tours is set to re-imagine luxury travel, offering discerning travellers unparalleled access to exclusive destinations, luxurious accommodation, and bespoke experiences tailored to their every desire.

The journey is far from over.
